Sports Taping
Sports Taping in Science City, Ahmedabad
You have seen it on athletes. Here is when it actually works — and when it does not.
Kinesio tape on a cricketer's shoulder. Rigid strapping on a wrestler's ankle. Sports taping is one of the most visible techniques in physiotherapy — and one of the most misunderstood. Applied correctly after a proper assessment, it supports recovery, corrects joint mechanics, and allows athletes and active patients to stay moving while tissue heals. Applied without assessment — as a cosmetic add-on or a generic support — it does very little.
At MoveSync, sports taping is always assessment-based. The type of tape, the direction of application, the tension, and the target are all determined by what the clinical assessment shows — not by a standard pattern applied to everyone with the same complaint.
What It Does for You
Sports taping works through two primary mechanisms depending on the type used.
Kinesio tape lifts the skin microscopically — creating space in the tissue beneath, improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing pain signals, and giving the nervous system better feedback about joint position and movement. It works with the body’s movement rather than restricting it.
Rigid tape does the opposite — it limits movement in a specific direction to protect a joint, correct a mechanical or positional fault, or offload a structure that is being overloaded. It is the tape of choice when stability and structural support are the clinical priority.
The result in both cases: a patient who can stay active during recovery, move with better mechanics, and — where rigid taping is used — return to sport or activity with appropriate joint support before full strength has been restored.
At MoveSync Specifically
Dr. Mansi Shah holds KT1 and KT2 certification in Kinesio Taping — the internationally recognised standard for clinical kinesio tape application. This covers assessment-based application, lymphatic taping, fascial correction, and sport-specific taping protocols.
Taping at MoveSync is never cosmetic. It is applied when the clinical assessment shows it will produce a specific, measurable benefit — improved joint mechanics, reduced pain, better muscle activation, or appropriate structural support during recovery. When taping is not indicated, it is not used.
What We Use Sports Taping For
Kinesio Taping:
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff — facilitating correct muscle activation patterns and reducing impingement under load
- Knee pain and patellofemoral pain — improving patellar tracking and reducing anterior knee pain during stairs, squats, and running
- Lower back pain — reducing pain and supporting movement during the acute phase without restricting mobility
- Ankle sprains and recovery — proprioceptive support during the return-to-activity phase
- Post-surgical swelling — lymphatic taping to manage oedema and bruising after surgery or injury
- Young athlete support — providing feedback and support for developing athletes during load-intensive training periods
Rigid Taping:
- Acute ankle sprains — joint stabilisation during the early recovery phase and return to sport
- Joint instability — wrist, thumb, and finger stabilisation for contact sport athletes
- Mechanical joint correction — correcting positional faults at the patella, shoulder, or foot where the joint is loading incorrectly and contributing to pain
- Return to sport support — providing structural protection for a recovering joint before full ligament or muscle strength has been restored
What to Expect — Before, During, and After
Before
During
Kinesio tape application is comfortable and quick. The tape is applied to clean, dry skin with a specific tension and direction. You will feel a gentle pulling sensation on the skin — this is normal and indicates the tape is working correctly. Rigid taping involves firmer application and a more noticeable restriction of movement in the targeted direction.
We assess, treat, and immediately re-test your movement in the same session — so you can feel the mechanical correction or facilitation effect of the tape before you leave the clinic.
